More than 200 people have become paid supporters of The London Minute in the past week. Without you, I was probably going to stop sending this free daily email.
I didn’t want to paywall it. And I will never run ads. But a year of curating and publishing every day at 7am for little return was starting to become… a questionable life choice!
So it’s heartening that so many of stepped up to prove you are willing to pay for something that’s free, just to ensure it exists. Sincerely, thank you. I’m glad you and I on the same page when it comes to the importance of access to local news, local democracy, grassroots campaigns, community spirit, civic pride and a few laughs along the way.
It was interesting, too, to see that ‘find a sponsor’ came out as the top suggestion in the poll on ways to keep the Minute ticking over. There’s no breakthrough on this but I’m open to suggestions. Please DM me on LinkedIn if you have an offer. It’s one of the most loyal audiences I’ve ever found, so maybe we can find them a good deal.
I’ve lost sleep thinking of ways to thank subscribers: by adding extra newsletters, exclusive content, sorting out discounts, merch or events. But having spoken to many of you (including free subscribers, paid subscribers and the publishers I link to) it’s clear that the main thing that matters to you is that The London Minute exists. You’re not too bothered about the potential other ‘rewards’ or perks and instead rely on this simple newsletter keeping you up to date.
So that’s what I’ll do. My motto as a sole trader is ‘do one thing really well.’ So I just curate the news to save you time. Who knows, maybe one day - thanks to readers sharing this via word-of-mouth - I will be able to employ someone to help out with those other fun things.
But meantime, just like last year when I said I’d check in after a year of publishing, I’ll commit to another year and see how it goes. So here’s to continuing to deliver on my promise to keep the Minute ad-free, free, independent of any external influence or ownership and landing daily in your inbox. I genuinely can’t do it without you, so thank you for your support and your time. I don’t take it for granted.
- Michael
